Turn, Turn, Turn

About an hour and a half ago, I stood in the empty kitchen of my two friend's apartment a mile from my house. I had just helped them take all the remaining boxes out to their car, where we had spent forever trying to get their giant TV to fit in the backseat among other piles of stuff.

Then, I hugged them both goodbye, told them to call when they got there, and turned toward my car.
Five years ago at this time, we were all euphoric with the excitement of a big move ahead. Saving money. Planning the final two months of our time in Madison before we left everything for California. We had nothing but big dreams and nothing to lose. We had this amazing friendship between the five of us and knew there would be tribulations, but together, we'd get through them and make things happen in this big, new world.

This, is the end of an era.

Despite the great things ahead for my two friends, and how happy I am for them to be moving on, my heart is broken. It feels like part of us is missing.

Visitor

My good friend Nicola is visiting for the week, and we're keeping busy. She's great - she's come to see me now three years in a row - which is wonderful times a million.

We're going thrifting today for a couple of photo shoots.

Something wonderful happened yesterday. We swam. In the ocean. Which I haven't done since I moved here to California four years ago. I know - it's ridiculous - but the combination of friends who don't like to swim and my aversion from wearing a swimsuit have cause this long hiatus of one of my favorite activities. Thankfully, a good friend and an OK swimsuit have changed things.

Now, I think it will be hard to keep me out.

More later.

blue bird

Taylor gave this bird to me, and it is very special. Well, I have two - and they're both special. She's been on a search for a particular bird, a very rare and special bird that has a particular meaning to her. These are similar, but not the right color - therefore, she gave them to me (since I also love birds). For some reason, I feel special because she passed them on to me. It might mean nothing to her (except for that she's getting rid of extra birds!) but to me, they are a connection to her. We don't see each other often, and she's dear to me, so knowing how special these birds are makes me feel closer by having them near.

I have tried to photograph them a million times. Tonight, I got it right.

Sleeping WOULD be Nice...

Last night, the visiting friends and a few other friends came with us to a showing of "The Dark Knight" at our local indie Deco movie theater, which shows 2 for 1 movies on Wednesday nights. The best part about the place is the fact that you can sit on a couch while you watch a movie. Oh, and they make food. So you can sit on a couch, eat your dinner, and watch a movie that you paid $3 dollars to get into. They also play classics every other Sunday.

The place was packed, and while Dave and I got our own couch, the girls had to share one. It was their "Triple Date Night".

It was our second time seeing the film, and I actually liked it better this time. Though I did fall asleep for about 10 minutes during the last quarter, long day at work and couch=tired. But for $3, hey! It was cool.

In other news, I'm excited to watch Barack Obama's nomination acceptance speech tonight. I hope he tries to bridle the JFK and talk to Americans with his best adult voice. It's crunch time!

I Can Has Fake Chikins?

Good day: Friends arrive. Friends immediately take me to great vegetarian restaurant. Friends are now sleeping in the living room because they're exhausted from flying.

Also, got my first big girl job proof today:

In other news, David passed the CSET and CBEST, the tests required for him to be accepted to the teaching program at SFSU. These tests are a huge deal - he worked really hard to get the job done and is now well on his way to becoming the next California Teacher of the Year. I'm really proud of him.

Welcome to the world, baby.

It's really wonderful to watch a dear friend hold her new daughter. I cried. She's beautiful.

Oh, bother.

Ahh, the joys of couple-friends. Or in this case, not-a-couple-anymore friends.
I spent the night with a dear friend who caught her long time, live in boyfriend doing some "things" with another woman yesterday and kicked the boyfriend out.

Needless to say, it wasn't good. It's a major shocker. To add to the situation, her boyfriend was calling D and I every 5 minutes, looking for my friend and most likely, to find a place to stay. When he wasn't calling us, he was calling her cell phone and their home phone. I felt bad for leaving the guy on his own, but he made his bed and I was surprised he'd put us in that really ackward situation. Do I let this person stay with us? I don't feel right doing that.

I'm just walking in the door and going to hug D now. :(
